Located on the eastern slope, Zafferana Etnea is an elegant town with a large central square offering a spectacular view of the coast and Calabria. But Zafferana is famous above all for one thing: Honey.
The Gold of Zafferana
About 15% of the national honey is produced here. Beekeeping farms are everywhere and offer free tastings. Not just the classic wildflower or orange blossom, but prized honeys like chestnut, eucalyptus, or prickly pear. Entering a 'Honey House' is a mandatory sensory experience.
The Ottobrata Zafferanese
Every Sunday in October, the town transforms for the Ottobrata, one of the most important festivals in Southern Italy. Each Sunday is dedicated to a different product: grapes, honey, Etna apples, porcini mushrooms, chestnuts.
The streets fill with food stalls, crafts, and thousands of visitors. The air smells of roasted chestnuts and new wine. If you are in Sicily in autumn, you cannot miss it (but arrive early for parking!).
The 1991-93 Lava Flow
Zafferana risked big in 1992. A huge lava flow stopped a few hundred meters from the first houses, after months of eruption. Today it is possible to visit the lava front and see the statue of the Madonna della Provvidenza, who according to the faithful stopped the destructive flow.
The Sicilian Pizza (the real one)
Zafferana is the home of the 'Siciliana', a fried (or baked) calzone filled with tuma (fresh cheese), anchovies, and black pepper. It is a calorie bomb but it is delicious. You cannot leave the town without having eaten one in the square.
Falcone Borsellino Amphitheater
In summer, the municipal amphitheater hosts 'Etna in Scena', a festival with concerts, theater, and dance. Watching a show under the stars, with Etna rumbling in the background, is evocative.
