Etna has become one of the most exciting wine regions in Europe. The volcanic soil, rich in minerals (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium), gives the wines a unique flavor and freshness impossible to replicate elsewhere. You don't just drink a wine, you drink the territory.
The King Grapes: Nerello and Carricante
The undisputed king of reds is **Nerello Mascalese**. Often compared to Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo for its elegance, pale ruby color, and aromas of red fruits and spices. It grows as bush vines (ad alberello), an ancient and laborious technique.
For whites, the protagonist is **Carricante**. An indigenous grape that produces white wines of great acidity, capable of aging beautifully. They are 'vertical', salty wines that smell of broom and sea.
The Wine Zones: The North Slope
The North slope (Castiglione di Sicilia, Randazzo, Passopisciaro) is the 'Côte d'Or' of Etna. Here you will find the most prestigious wineries and historic vineyards, some pre-phylloxera (survived the disease that destroyed European vineyards in the 19th century).
The temperature variations between day and night here are extreme, favoring the development of aromas in the grapes. A visit to a winery in these parts is a journey into Sicilian rural history.
Wine Tourism: Tastings and Lunches
Almost all wineries offer guided tours with tasting. Don't just expect a glass of wine: often the experience includes a light lunch with local products (black pork salami, cheese, olives, homemade bread).
Always book in advance, especially on weekends or during the harvest (October).
The Concept of Contrada
On Etna, wine is divided by 'Contrade'. It is a concept similar to French 'Cru'. A vineyard growing on a lava flow from 1600 tastes different from one growing on a flow from 1900, even if they are only a few meters apart.
Each lava flow has different minerals. When you buy an Etna DOC, look for the name of the Contrada on the label: it is the precise identity card of that wine.
Shipping Wine Home
Once you taste Etna Rosso, you'll want to take it home. But bottles in a suitcase are a risk. Almost all wineries offer insured international shipping service.
Shipping costs are reasonable if you buy at least 6 or 12 bottles. It is better to pay 30 euros for shipping than to find clothes stained red in your suitcase!
Etna Bianco Superiore
There is a niche within a niche: Etna Bianco Superiore. It can be produced ONLY in the municipality of Milo, on the East slope. Here it rains a lot (more than in London!), and the Carricante grape develops a cutting acidity that allows the wine to age for 10 or 20 years, improving like great German Rieslings.
Why Choose It
- Nerello Mascalese (Elegant Red)
- Carricante (Mineral White)
- North Slope: Classic Zone
- East Slope: Bianco Superiore Zone (Milo)
- Centenary Vines on Ungrafted Rootstock
