It seems like an oxymoron: Sicily and skiing. Yet Etna exceeds 3300 meters and in winter snow falls abundantly. Skiing here is a unique experience in the world. The white of the snow contrasts with the black of the lava stones that pop up here and there, and on the horizon you don't see mountains, but the deep blue of the Ionian Sea.
The Two Ski Areas
There are two areas for skiing: Etna North (Piano Provenzana - Linguaglossa) and Etna South (Rifugio Sapienza - Nicolosi).
Etna North is more 'Alpine', with slopes immersed in a pine forest and spectacular views of Taormina. It has 4 lifts (ski lifts and chairlift). Etna South is more barren and lunar, served by the Cable Car and ski lifts, with a view of the Gulf of Catania.
Not Only Downhill
Etna is a paradise for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing. The freedom to go off-piste (always with volcanological guides if you go high!) on virgin slopes is priceless. There are no crevasses like on Alpine glaciers, but you have to be careful of craters and hot zones!
When to Go
The season usually runs from January to March, but everything depends on the snowfall. Being in the South, the snow can melt quickly if the sirocco arrives, or fall heavily in one night. Always check the 'EtnaSci' snow report.
Sicilian Après-ski
No bombardino or mulled wine here (although you can find them). The real Etna après-ski is going down to the sea to eat fresh fish or a granita, if the day is warm. Going from ski suit to t-shirt in half an hour is a luxury that only Etna gives.
