The Etna Cable Car is on the southern side of the volcano, at Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza. The basic ticket takes you by cable car from 1,923 to 2,500 metres; Tour 3,000 adds a transfer by 4×4 bus or snowcat and the services of an alpine or volcanological guide. They are distinct products, with different prices, durations and inclusions. What you can do with the 2,500 m ticket
The cable car departs from the Rifugio Sapienza square on the Nicolosi side and climbs about 577 metres in elevation. At the upper station, you will find a landscape of volcanic sands, views towards the summit craters and, in good visibility, a broad stretch of coastline. The operator also notes that windproof jackets, boots and walking poles can be rented at altitude.
The €54 ticket provides transport, not a guided visit to the summit craters. It does not include the 4×4 bus, a dedicated guide, lunch or an organised trek. Reaching 2,500 m does not entitle you to continue wherever you wish: you must comply with the signage, barriers and restrictions in force.
What Tour 3,000 adds
From the 2,500 m station, the tour continues by special vehicle to the maximum altitude permitted by the authorities. The final stretch is covered with an alpine or volcanological guide, among recent craters and lava flows in the accessible area. The operator states a total duration of about two and a half hours and an easy level of difficulty.
The name “Tour 3,000” identifies a commercial experience, not a guarantee of arriving at an exact, fixed point. Weather, volcanic activity and official orders may change the transport, altitude or itinerary. The official website lists Italian, English and French as guide languages: a page translated into another language does not guarantee a guide in that language.
Online tickets, Fast Track and refund conditions
Buying online includes Fast Track, allowing you to bypass the ticket-office queue and go straight to boarding. Keep your digital ticket throughout the experience. Check the date carefully: the terms of sale state that the ticket is personal, valid only for the stated day and non-transferable.
The official conditions set strict terms in the event of bad weather, volcanic activity, technical closures or non-use. Alternative transport may be used in place of the cable car for operational reasons, and the high-altitude section may be suspended, leaving only the service to 2,500 m available. Read these conditions before paying, not after a change to your plans.
The simplest choice
Buy the cable-car ticket only if you primarily want the views and a few hours at altitude. Choose Tour 3,000 if you want a package that already combines the cable car, a special vehicle and a guide. Choose a Dream Island excursion on Etna North instead if you prefer trekking, small groups and a guided itinerary that starts on the other side of the volcano.
Etna South cable car or an excursion from Etna North?
This is the most useful comparison for visitors choosing through our site. The Etna Cable Car leaves from Rifugio Sapienza on the southern side. The Dream Island experiences described below start or take place on the northern side, around Linguaglossa, Piano Provenzana, the Sartorius Craters, the 2002 lava flows and high-altitude routes. Do not buy the cable-car ticket assuming that it is included in a Dream Island tour, unless the tour page explicitly says so.

Getting there and how much time to allow
For the cable car, set your destination to Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza – Etna Cable Car, not simply “Mount Etna”. From Catania, you normally drive up via Nicolosi. On busy days, allow extra time for traffic, parking, ticket collection, getting equipped and the return journey; if you have a later booking, do not rely solely on the advertised duration of the ride.
For activities on Etna North, use Piano Provenzana/Linguaglossa or the pick-up point stated in your Dream Island confirmation. Rifugio Sapienza and Piano Provenzana are on different sides of the volcano and cannot be reached quickly by crossing the mountain: checking the meeting point avoids the most common logistical error.
Clothing, health, children and dogs
Even in summer, bring footwear with good grip, comfortable trousers, a fleece and a windproof jacket. At 2,500–3,000 m, temperatures and wind are very different from those on the coast. The operator advises against these experiences for people with heart or respiratory conditions, hypertension, and during pregnancy; if in doubt, seek medical advice and check the service requirements.
The operator allows dogs if they are kept on a lead and muzzled, but prohibits large luggage and drones. When travelling with children, consider the cold, altitude and actual duration as well as the fare. Free admission does not automatically mean that every part of the experience is suitable for every age.

Does the cable car reach the summit craters?
