Mt. Etna Cable Car: Prices, Hours and What to Know Before You Pay

Dec 29, 2025 Etna Excursion Team 6 min read

⚡️ Quick Answer for the rushed:

Is it open today? Depends on the wind. If winds >30km/h, the cable car closes and Jeeps leave from the bottom instead.

How much? About €50 for Cable Car Only (Round trip), or about €78 for Full Package (Cable Car + 4x4 Bus + Guide up to 2900m).

If you're planning to ascend the South Side (Rifugio Sapienza), the Cable Car is the obligatory funnel for those who don't want to hike 4 hours uphill. But prices are often confusing. In this guide, we explain exactly what you're buying with your ticket and if it's really worth it.

2024/2025 Price Table (South Side)

Prices may undergo slight seasonal variations, but these are the reference rates at the ticket office:

Ticket Type Indicative Price (Adults) What's Included
Cable Car Only (Round Trip) ~€30 - €35 Ascent from 1900m to 2500m. From there, you are on your own.
Cable Car + 4x4 Bus (No Guide) ~€65 You reach 2900m (Torre del Filosofo) but have no guide for explanations.
Full Package (Cable Car + Bus + Guide) ~€78 - €80 Recommended. You reach 2900m and tour the 2002 craters with a volcanological guide (mandatory by law in some zones).
Children (5-10 years) Reduced (~30-50%) Kids under 4 usually go free (bring ID).
Note: Tickets are bought on site at the Rifugio Sapienza square. In summer, expect queues (40-60 min). Our organized tours often include ticket management to skip part of the bureaucracy.

Opening Hours (Winter vs Summer)

  • Summer Season (Apr - Oct): Opening 9:00 - Last ascent ~16:00 (Down by 17:00).
  • Winter Season (Nov - Mar): Opening 9:00 - Early closing at 15:45 (gets dark and freezes early).

Enemy Number 1: THE WIND.
Etna is high. If gusts exceed 30-40 km/h, the cable car swings and is stopped for safety. If this happens, don't despair: replacement 4x4 Buses leave directly from the parking lot (same cost, but take longer and bump around a lot).

How the Ascent Works (Step by Step)

  1. 1900m Level (Start): Park your car at Rifugio Sapienza (blue lines paid parking, bring coins or EasyPark app). Take the cabin (6 seats).
  2. 2500m Level (Intermediate - La Montagnola): In 15 mins you arrive here. There's a Bar, toilets, and jacket rental. If you paid for Cable Car only, you stop here. The landscape is already lunar.
  3. 2900m Level (Torre del Filosofo): If you have the full package, you board large 4x4 trucks (Unimog) that climb the ash. You arrive at the foot of the Summit Craters.

Is It Worth It? (The Truth)

Many tourists complain about the price ("It's robbery!"). Here is an honest analysis:

✅ YES, if...

  • You are not fit and want to see the "real" volcano without sweating.
  • You want to reach 2900m (the maximum safe limit).
  • You have children (the cabin and truck ride is an adventure for them).
  • The weather is clear (sea view is priceless).

❌ NO, if...

  • There is thick fog down below (you won't see anything).
  • You are an expert hiker (you can hike up and save money, but it's tough).
  • You expect to see liquid lava flowing at your feet (very rare, lava is seen from afar if there's an eruption).

"Low Cost" or "Free" Alternatives

If €80 per person seems too much, here are the best local alternatives:

1. Schiena dell'Asino Trekking (Free)

A beautiful, free trail starting 1km before Rifugio Sapienza. It takes you to overlook the Valle del Bove. You don't reach 2900m, but the view is perhaps even better.

2. Cable Car Only + Trekking (Half Cost)

Pay the €30-35 for the cable car to 2500m. From there, instead of paying for the Bus, hike up towards the 2002 craters. Warning: you need real hiking boots, the climb is on volcanic sand (one step forward, two back) and is tiring. Don't do it if you're not fit.

FAQ: Frequent Questions No One Tells You

Can I go up in sneakers?

Up to 2500m (bar) yes, but they will fill with black sand. If you want to walk or go to 2900m, absolutely not. Lava rock cuts soles and you will slip. Rent hiking boots at the start or arrival station (~€5).

Is it cold up there even in summer?

Yes! At 2900m it is 10-15 degrees cooler than Catania. If it's 30°C at the sea, it's 15°C up there with wind. Always bring a hoodie and windbreaker. If you lack one, rent it at 2500m.

Can dogs go on the cable car?

Yes, generally admitted in the cabin (leash and muzzle if requested) but always confirm at the ticket office as rules change.

Can heart patients or pregnant women go up?

Not recommended to go beyond 2500m. Oxygen thinning and sulfur can cause issues. Stop at the cable car arrival station which is safe.
