If you want to see the Valle del Bove in all its majesty, this is the right path. The name derives from the shape of the mountain ridge that you walk along, which resembles the back of a donkey. It is one of the classics of Etna hiking.
The Path
It starts not far from the Sapienza Refuge. The first stretch is uphill, inside a reforested pine forest. The slope is constant but not prohibitive. As you go up, the trees thin out and leave room for Astragalus cushions (holy thorn).
Arriving at the top of the ridge (about 2000m), the panorama suddenly opens up. In front of you is the precipice towards the Valle del Bove and, facing it, the Summit Craters smoking. The spectacle is grandiose.
Observing Eruptions
This is a privileged and safe point to observe the eruptions that pour into the Valle del Bove. At night, seeing the red lava flows descending into the darkness of the valley, sitting comfortably on the edge of the ridge, is an unforgettable experience.
