Along the Mareneve road, on the North side, there is a perfect lava tunnel, which can be visited without complex caving equipment (just a helmet and a torch are enough). It is the Cave of Thieves (or of the Snow), a testimony to how man has used the volcano over the centuries.
How it Formed
It is a 'flow cave': it forms when the surface of a lava river cools and solidifies, creating a roof, while the liquid lava continues to flow underneath. When the eruption ends and the 'tube' drains, the gallery remains.
On the walls, you can still see 'dog's teeth' (remelting stalactites) and level lines left by the lava.
The Ice House and the Brigands
In ancient times it was used as an 'ice house': in winter, snow was accumulated inside, covering it with layers of ash to insulate it. In summer, the snow that had turned into ice was cut and sold in the city to make granitas and sorbets.
Legend has it that in the 18th century a gang of brigands used it as a hideout. It is said that they had dug a secondary exit (still visible as a hole in the ceiling) to escape if the guards blocked the main entrance.
Why Choose It
- Easy access (a few slippery steps)
- Helmet mandatory (low ceiling)
- History of the 'Ice House'
- Legend of the brigands
