Monte Nero degli Zappini: Volcanic School

2025-12-22 Etna Excursion Team 5 min read

It was the first 'Nature Trail' established by the Etna Park. It is a perfect loop path to understand the evolution of the volcanic landscape. It starts from the plateau near the Grande Albergo dell'Etna (South).

What You See

The trail crosses a splendid Laricio pine forest. You encounter old lava flows now colonized by lichens, and more recent sharp black flows. You pass by small extinct craters ('hornitos' or mounds) and you can also see a small flow cave.

The name 'Zappini' derives from the dialect term for pines (zappino = pine). Monte Nero is the volcanic cone that dominates the route.

For Everyone

It is an easy walk, almost flat or with minimal elevation changes, suitable for school groups and families. It is ideal for a first soft approach to Etna, enjoying the scent of resin and the silence of the woods.

Why Choose It

  • Easy loop (4km)
