When does it snow on Etna?

Etna is not only a volcano of fire, but also an extraordinary snowy mountain. The question "Is it snowing on Etna?" is one of the most typed from December to March. Being a volcano exceeding 3,300 meters, snow is a constant presence during the Sicilian winter, but conditions vary dramatically depending on the altitude.

Snow Seasonality

  • November First dustings above 2000m. Snow usually does not stay on the ground long at tourist altitudes (Rifugio Sapienza).
  • Dec - Feb High Season. Heavy snowfalls are frequent. Piano Provenzana (North) and Rifugio Sapienza (South) are often whitened. It is the best time for snowshoeing and skiing.
  • Mar - Apr Spring snow ("firn"). Excellent for ski mountaineering at high altitude, but roads are generally clean.

Chains Obligation and Traffic

⚠️ Attention to Legal Obligations

On Etna roads (SP92 for Etna South and Mareneve for Etna North), there is an obligation for chains on board or winter tires from November 15th to April 15th. Checks by Traffic Police and Forest Rangers are frequent, especially on snowy weekends.

Don't risk getting stuck or getting a fine. Even if it's sunny and 15 degrees in Catania, at 1900 meters the road can be icy.

Pro Tip: If "it is snowing on Etna" right at this moment, snowplows are in action. However, during intense storms, roads might be closed temporarily. Always check the weather before going up.

Where to see snow? North vs South

Etna South (Nicolosi)

More touristy and crowded. The cable car is here. Great for those who want to see snow without skiing or to have a coffee with a view.

  • Easy to reach
  • Many services and bars
  • Much traffic on weekends

Etna North (Piano Provenzana)

The true snow paradise. Here you find alpine scenery with snowy pine forests. It is the main ski resort.

  • Most beautiful scenery
  • Best ski slopes
  • Less chaotic
