Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece was not filmed in Corleone (which was too modern in the 70s), but in small medieval villages in the province of Messina and Catania. A tour that combines cinema, history and breathtaking landscapes.
Savoca: The Wedding Village
Perched on a hill, Savoca is one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy'. Here Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) sees Apollonia for the first time.
The iconic place is **Bar Vitelli**, still open and identical to the film. You can sit at the same table as Al Pacino and enjoy a lemon granita, just as he does while asking the girl's father for her hand.
The Church of San Nicolò
Not far from Bar Vitelli is the church where the wedding between Michael and Apollonia is celebrated. Walking through the stone alleys will make you feel inside the film.
From the church square you can enjoy a spectacular view over the valley to the Ionian Sea.
Forza d'Agrò and the Cathedral
Another splendid village is Forza d'Agrò. The Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata appears in several scenes of The Godfather II and III (remember Vito Corleone hidden in the donkey?).
It is a labyrinth of narrow streets, arches and stairways that exude authentic Sicilian character.
The Castle of the Slaves (Fiumefreddo)
Perhaps the most emblematic place: Don Tommasino's villa. Here Michael hid, here the car with Apollonia exploded (heartbreaking scene) and here, in Godfather III, Michael dies sitting on the chair (final scene).
The castle is private (owned by the Platania family) but often open for guided tours by reservation. Entering the courtyard is a thrill for every movie buff.
