Before choosing a car, bus or transfer, decide exactly where you are going. “Etna” is not an address: for Etna South, the reference point is Rifugio Sapienza/Etna Cable Car; for Etna North, it is Piano Provenzana above Linguaglossa. The two points are on different sides of the volcano, and a mistake in your sat-nav can make you miss an excursion.

Enter the point stated on your ticket or confirmation into your sat-nav, not simply “Etna craters”. Also check whether the tour includes pick-up: the meeting point for a Dream Island activity may be in Linguaglossa, at Piano Provenzana or at one of the designated pick-up points.
Getting to Etna from Catania by car
From Catania, Rifugio Sapienza is normally the most straightforward destination: drive through Nicolosi and continue along the provincial road to about 1,900 m. In normal conditions, allow around an hour, but city traffic, roadworks, snow and finding parking can add considerable time.
To reach Piano Provenzana from Catania, you need to head for the north-eastern side via Linguaglossa. The journey is longer, so allow extra time, especially for a morning departure. If your tour starts at 08:30, your departure time from the accommodation must also allow for parking, toilets, registration and getting dressed for the conditions.
Getting there from Taormina or Giardini Naxos
From Taormina and Giardini Naxos, Piano Provenzana is often the more logical choice because it is reached via Linguaglossa. Depending on traffic and your exact starting point, allow approximately one to one and a half hours. Reaching Rifugio Sapienza means going around the volcano to the south and may be less efficient.
Do not choose a side on driving time alone. If you want the Etna Cable Car, you must go south; if you have booked a Dream Island trek on Etna North, follow the meeting point in your confirmation even if a generic map search suggests another access route.
Public bus: when it is useful and what to check
Public transport to Etna’s tourist elevations is limited and may offer only one usable outbound-and-return combination. Timetables, stops and seasonal operation can change: consult the official carrier for your exact date and check the final return service before booking an activity. We do not copy a timetable here that is bound to become outdated.
The bus can be an affordable option for people who want to spend a few hours at Rifugio Sapienza, but it is not very flexible if the cable car opens late, you want a long tour or the weather changes. Direct links to Etna North are even more limited: a car, transfer or tour with transport is often needed.
Transfers and tours with pick-up: read what is included carefully
A tour with transport can take care of the guide, parking and return journey, but “pick-up included” does not mean collection outside every hotel in Sicily. For Dream Island group activities, free pick-up is stated within 30 km of Linguaglossa and only at the points provided for the tour. For private tours, a different meeting point may be agreed according to the itinerary.
During booking, select the most suitable available point and use the time in your confirmation. From central Catania or locations outside the stated area, there may be a supplement, an alternative meeting point or a separate transfer; ask before paying.

With a car, add rental, fuel, possible parking and winter equipment. With the bus, consider any taxi needed to reach the stop or accommodation. With a tour, check whether the price includes pick-up, guide, insurance, equipment, lunch and high-altitude transport. Two prices are not comparable if one covers transport only and the other covers a full excursion.
Recommended margin
For an activity with a fixed time, arrive at least 20–30 minutes early at the stated point. In winter or at weekends, allow a larger margin and check road conditions that same morning.
Driving on Etna in winter
Snow and ice can make chains or winter tyres mandatory or necessary. Check road notices and the weather before starting the climb; do not wait until you find snow to learn how to fit chains. Park only in authorised spaces and do not drive past closures or barriers.
