Volcanic Safari: Discovering Etna in 4x4

2025-12-22 Etna Excursion Team 5 min read

For those who love adrenaline and want to reach panoramic points otherwise inaccessible, the Jeep tour is the ideal solution. Forget paved roads: here we dance on lava. Our Land Rover Defender vehicles are equipped to tackle slopes and rough terrain, taking you into the wild heart of the volcano.

The Off-Road Route

The typical excursion starts from the villages on the slopes and climbs rapidly through old country paths and dirt forest tracks. We cross the forest belt, where jeeps make their way through oaks and chestnuts, to then emerge on the lava desert.

One of the highlights is crossing the 2002 lava flow at Piano Provenzana. Seeing the track open up in the middle of black rock walls meters high, cut by bulldozers after the eruption, is impressive. You have the physical perception of the destructive power of lava.

Suitable for Everyone (almost)

Despite the 'adventurous' look, jeep tours are suitable for families and children. We don't race like in a rally; we proceed at moderate speed to enjoy the landscape. Stops are frequent for explanations, photos, and short walks (for example on the Sartorius Craters or at the Cave of Thieves).

It is only not recommended for pregnant women or people with serious back problems, due to the jolts of the rough terrain.

Sunset by Jeep

The most requested option is the sunset tour. We go up in the afternoon, do the off-road part, and stop at a strategic viewpoint for an aperitif as the sun goes down. Drinking a glass of Etna Rosso sitting on the hood of the jeep, with the volcano behind and the sea in front, is the essence of freedom.

Safety on Off-Road Vehicles

Our Jeeps undergo rigorous checks. The volcanic terrain is corrosive and destroys suspensions, so maintenance is daily.

Drivers are all professionals with NCC licenses and specific permits for off-road driving. Do not improvise yourself as rally drivers with your rental car on the tracks: insurance does not cover damage to the underbody!
