Imagine a red and cream little train, with an antique flavor, clattering slowly between black lava flows and rows of bright green vines. The Etna Wine Train is not just a means of transport, it is a time machine that takes you to discover the winemaking tradition of the volcano.
The Circumetnea Itinerary
The tour uses the historic Circumetnea railway (FCE), inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, which circumnavigates the volcano. The most evocative stretch is the one that goes from Piedimonte Etneo to Randazzo, passing through Linguaglossa.
You travel aboard a vintage diesel railcar (the Littorina). From the windows you can see landscapes that change continuously: citrus groves, hazelnut groves, prickly pears and then, higher and higher, the heroic vineyards clinging to the lava stone terraces.
Stops at Wineries
The experience is not just by rail. On board there is a guide who tells the history of the territory. Upon arrival at the destination stations (such as Randazzo or Solicchiata), a hop-on hop-off 'Wine Bus' awaits you to take you to partner wineries.
Here you get off, visit the barrels, walk among the vines and obviously taste. Etna Rosso, Etna Bianco, rosés... accompanied by local products. It is an excellent way to drink without having to worry about driving back.
Sicilian Slow Travel
This tour is the praise of slowness. The train goes slowly, the stops are relaxed. It is perfect for couples or groups of friends who want to dedicate a whole day to good living, culture and landscape. Do not rush, let yourself be lulled by the rhythm of the volcano.
Randazzo: The Black City
The train stops in Randazzo, a medieval city built entirely of lava stone. It is the only city on Etna that escaped all eruptions, despite being very close to the crater.
Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria, black and imposing. It is said that the city is protected by the three Saints to whom the three main churches are dedicated.
Gastronomic Pairings
During stops, wine is served with 'zero kilometer' products. You will taste Nebrodi provola, black pig salami (a native breed that lives wild in the woods) and wood-fired homemade bread.
It is not a simple aperitif, it is a traveling lunch that will satisfy you.
