Alcantara Gorges: Water and Fire Meet

2025-12-22 Etna Excursion Team 5 min read

A few kilometers from Etna flows a river that has carved a work of art. The Alcantara Gorges are not just a simple canyon: they are black lava walls up to 25 meters high, shaped into perfect prismatic forms (columnar basalt) by the rapid cooling of the flow in contact with freezing water.

A Unique Geosite in the World

The origin of the Gorges dates back thousands of years ago, when a lava flow from Etna (probably from the Mojo crater) invaded the bed of the Alcantara river. The cold water crystallized the lava instantly, creating hexagonal and pentagonal prisms that seem carved by a giant stonemason.

Today it is possible to walk inside the riverbed (water reaches the knees or waist) and touch these geometric walls with your hand. The water is infamous for being freezing even in August (around 8-10 degrees!), a true panacea against the Sicilian heat.

What to Do: Body Rafting and Relax

For the more adventurous, the main activity is Body Rafting: you go up the river swimming and climbing on rocks (with wetsuit and helmet provided by guides) and let yourself be carried by the current on the way back. Pure adrenaline in a Jurassic scenario.

For those who prefer relaxation, there is the Gorges beach (municipal access or via private elevator) where you can sunbathe and dip your feet. Watch out for crowds on August weekends!

The Botanical and Geological Park

Above the gorges extends a nature trail that offers panoramic views from above. It is perfect for those who do not want to get wet and prefer to admire the power of nature from an aerial perspective, surrounded by citrus groves and Mediterranean scrub.

The Myth of Temperature

It is said that the waters of the Alcantara have healing powers. They certainly reactivate circulation! Dipping your legs for a few minutes has an immediate toning effect. Some athletes come here for natural cryotherapy after workouts.

Quad Excursions

Around the gorges, in the valley, quad tours are organized that cross the river at fordable points. It is a very fun way to explore the agrarian valley surrounding the canyon, passing through fragrant citrus groves and old farmhouses.
