Crossing the Ragabo Forest along the Mareneve road, we reach Piano Provenzana at 1,800 m: a hub for skiing and hiking on the north side. A unique spot, set in the pine forest with an almost Alpine feel, with spectacular views as far as the Ionian Sea and the Strait of Messina.
Trekking to the 2002 Craters & sunset
An easy trek takes us up to the 2002 Craters at 2,050 m, passing near the base of the Monte Nero degli Zappini crater. Walking along the rims you reach a breathtaking viewpoint: Sicily's eastern coast, the Aeolian Islands, the Ionian Sea and Calabria on the horizon. At sunset at altitude it gets chilly: bring a windbreaker/hoodie (rental available), comfortable closed shoes and a small torch. Dinner/snacks are not included, so consider bringing some.
